Linux GPS

Wow. I thought I knew a lot about GPS, but I really don't understand crap. I have a small Garmin Geko 201 device, and now a nice new EEEpc 901a (with Ubuntu Netbook Edition. ) So i want to use my Geko and my EEEpc together. Simple right? Install GPS softwares (TangoGPS, viking, and GPSDrive), connect device, and ...... What? Where do I get maps? Can I download maps before my trip? I'm going to Las Vegas. Do I need network connectivity the whole time to see updated maps?

Why isn't there a simple, easy to use, set up guide? Maybe there is one and you know where?

Thanks in advance
